On October 26th, 2016, the PPA held the
Opening Ceremony for the 1st ASEAN Workshop for English Teachers of
Police Training Institutions to discuss on building ESP courses for police
officers by sharing successes and challenges.
The Workshop aimes at expanding the project “Strengthening
of English language capacity for Vietnamese police force” supported by the
United States of America Embassy in Hanoi since 2014.
Attending the Opening Ceremony were Mrs. Diane Millar
- Director of the Regional English Language Office (RELO) - the United States
Embassy in Hanoi; representatives of the Embassy of Indonesia, Embassy of
Malaysia in Hanoi; representatives of the Office of Public Security Ministry,
Department of Training, Department of Foreign Affairs - Ministry of Public
Security. As for the PPA were Lieutenant General, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Yem, President
of the PPA; representatives of the functional units within the PPA and 30
English teachers of the police training institutions in Vietnam and other ASEAN
member countries.

Before the trend of international and regional
integration, the establishment of the ASEAN Community (October 31st,
2015) creates the advantages as well as the difficulties and challenges to the
stability and security of each country in the Association, especially the
increase in types of transnational organized crimes such as terrorism, human
trafficking, illegal immigration, trafficking of wild animals, etc. This
situation requires the Public Secuirty force of the countries to closely
coordinate in combating and preventing this crimes.
English has been very important for the international
cooperation of the police agencies and the law enforcement forces of the ASEAN
countries in preventing and suppressing the transnational crimes. Participating
in the Workshop, the English teachers will have the opportunity to learn, share
experiences in raising the quality of English teaching in general and ESP teaching
in particular, promoting the cooperative relationship among the police training
institutions in ASEAN countries.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Lieutenant General,
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Yem, President of the PPA highly appreciated the effective
and practical support of the US Embassy in Hanoi. The President of the PPA also
stressed the important role of teaching English in police training institutions
to the targets of peace, stability and development of the ASEAN Community.

As planned, the Workshop will be held in 03 days,
from October 26th - 28th, 2016. This event has the
special significance, not only contributes to improving the capacity of English
teaching and the quality of police training, but also strengthens the
cooperation among the ASEAN member countries as well as the international
police community.
In the framework of the workshop, the participants
will discuss the issues related to the design of ESP courses for police
officers, such as: Some theoretical issues about ESP; compilation and
assessment of ESP textbooks; system of solutions to enhance the quality of ESP
training; ESP teaching methods, etc.
